Houston HVAC cost calculator
Ranges for common AC repairs and for full system replacement in the Houston area. It asks nothing about you, the estimate updates as you change the options, and the sources behind the numbers are listed further down the page.
Methodology
Where these numbers come from
Last updated: September 2026.
Every range in this calculator traces to published cost data, either from Houston-area contractors publishing their own pricing or from national cost datasets for 2026. Nothing here is invented, and where an input could not be supported by data it was removed rather than estimated.
Repair ranges
Repair figures come from national 2026 cost data for the specific job. Capacitor replacement is drawn from published ranges covering the part, labour and the diagnostic charge. Compressor and evaporator coil figures reflect out-of-warranty replacement including refrigerant recovery and recharge. Blower motor figures are split by motor type, since a single-speed PSC and a variable-speed ECM are genuinely different costs rather than a market spread. Diagnostic and service call fees reflect typical Houston-area practice.
Replacement ranges
Replacement figures are anchored on two things. One Houston contractor publishes flat-rate system pricing running from about $9,999 for a two ton system to $12,699 for a five ton, including removal of the old equipment and installation. Broader cost data for the Houston metro places full HVAC replacement in the region of $7,500 to $14,000 depending on scope and equipment, with high-efficiency variable-speed systems above that. The ranges here bracket both.
The two adjustments that are assumptions
Two multipliers in this tool are not taken from a published dataset, and it is only fair to say so plainly.
- After-hours work is adjusted upward by 25 percent. It is well established across the trade that unscheduled out-of-hours labour costs more. The specific percentage is a reasonable assumption rather than a measured figure.
- Attic equipment is adjusted upward by 10 percent. Attic work genuinely takes longer than working at ground level. Again, the specific figure is an assumption.
Equipment tier multipliers for two-stage and variable-speed systems are similarly directional rather than precise, because tier pricing is not published in a consistent, comparable form. They reflect the documented fact that staging and efficiency raise cost.
What this deliberately does not do
It does not ask for your name, email address, phone number or postcode. It does not produce a figure to the dollar. It does not include commercial work, which varies too much to range meaningfully. And it does not adjust for brand, because equipment pricing by brand is not published in a form that would support it.
The full source list, with URLs and dates accessed, is kept in the project documentation as HVAC_COST_METHODOLOGY.md and is updated when the underlying data is reviewed.
Using the numbers
What to do with a range once you have one
Sanity-check a quote
If a quote sits far below the range, ask what is not included. If it sits far above, ask what is included that you had not accounted for. Both questions are reasonable and both get answered by any legitimate contractor.
Compare repair against replacement
Price the repair, then price the replacement, and look at them together. A compressor at the top of its range against a system replacement at the bottom of its range is a very different decision from the reverse.
Decide whether it is worth a visit
Sometimes the useful outcome is realising the likely cost is lower than feared, and that a diagnosis is worth booking rather than putting off through another summer.
Worth remembering: on any repair over roughly a thousand dollars, asking what specific readings led to the diagnosis is a fair question, and getting a second opinion is normal rather than insulting.
The variables this cannot see
What moves a real quote away from a range
A calculator works from categories. A quote works from your house. The gap between them is made up of things nobody can capture in three dropdowns.
- What the technician finds. A capacitor replacement on a system with a badly corroded contactor and a dirty condenser coil is not the same job as a capacitor replacement on a clean system.
- Access. A low attic with no decking, a condenser wedged against a fence, or an air handler in a closet with no working room all add time.
- Part availability. Some brands and some ages of equipment have parts on the shelf. Others involve a wait and a special order.
- Warranty status. The single biggest swing factor on coil and compressor jobs. Registered equipment inside its parts warranty can halve a bill.
- Duct condition. On a replacement, whether the existing duct is sound or needs correcting can move the total by thousands. See ductwork.
- What the house actually needs. A load calculation sometimes shows the existing system was the wrong size all along, which changes the conversation entirely.
Turning a range into a number
The only thing that does that is somebody looking at the system. What you get from a call is a straight answer about what is likely, what it will cost to find out, and whether it needs doing today.
