AC keeps shutting off and restarting

A system that runs for a few minutes, stops, then starts again shortly after. It is called short cycling, it wears equipment out fast, and it has a specific set of causes.

What short cycling means

Short cycling is a system that satisfies, or thinks it satisfies, far too quickly, or that is being shut down by a safety device and restarting once it resets. Both look identical from the living room.

The distinction matters because the first group is mostly about sizing, thermostats and airflow, while the second means a safety control is repeatedly protecting the equipment from a genuine fault. The second group is more urgent.

Worth checking first

  • Filter condition. Restricted airflow causes cycling on safety limits
  • Whether the thermostat sits in sun, near a lamp, or near a supply register
  • Whether all supply registers are open and returns unobstructed
  • Whether ice is forming on the copper lines between cycles
  • Whether the outdoor coil is blocked by vegetation or debris

Causes

The two families of cause

Group one: the system thinks it is finished

Oversized equipment. The most common structural cause. A system with more capacity than the house needs hits setpoint fast and shuts off, then the temperature drifts up and it starts again. Typically this pattern is worst in mild weather and improves on very hot days, when the load finally matches the capacity. It also leaves the house humid, because moisture removal needs run time. This one is not fixable without addressing the equipment, usually at replacement.

Thermostat placement or fault. A thermostat reading a local warm spot from sunlight or a nearby lamp will cycle the system as that spot heats and cools rather than as the house does. A thermostat too close to a supply register sees cold air blowing on it and shuts off early, which produces textbook short cycling.

Group two: a safety control is shutting it down

Restricted airflow. A clogged filter, dirty evaporator coil or blocked returns starve the system of air. Pressures fall, the coil gets too cold, and a low pressure control cuts out. The system rests, the coil warms slightly, it restarts, and the cycle repeats. Left alone this progresses to a frozen coil.

Low refrigerant charge. A leaking system runs low pressures and trips the low pressure safety, then restarts once pressures equalise. The cycling gets more frequent as more charge is lost. See refrigerant leak repair.

A dirty condenser coil, or a failing condenser fan. If heat cannot leave the outdoor unit, head pressure climbs until a high pressure control cuts out. The unit sits, cools down, and restarts. This one tends to appear only on the hottest part of the day, which is a useful clue.

Electrical faults. A failing capacitor can let a compressor start and then drop out on its overload protector. A loose connection can do the same. This group tends to produce cycling that is more erratic than rhythmic.

Compressor overload. A compressor drawing excessive current trips its internal overload, cools, and resets. This is one of the less encouraging findings and usually appears alongside other symptoms. See compressor replacement.

Reading the timing

What the rhythm tells a technician

How the cycling behaves distinguishes between the two families surprisingly well.

  • Regular, rhythmic, worse in mild weather. Points at oversizing or thermostat placement. The system genuinely is satisfying too fast.
  • Worse on the hottest afternoons, fine in the morning. Points at a high pressure cutout. Think condenser coil or condenser fan.
  • Progressive over weeks, getting shorter. Points at a developing refrigerant leak or a coil icing up gradually.
  • Erratic and unpredictable. Points at electrical faults or a compressor overload rather than a control issue.
  • Runs, ices up, stops for a long period, then works again. A freezing cycle. Address it before the compressor takes liquid.

If you can note roughly how long it runs and how long it rests, and whether it differs morning to afternoon, that is genuinely diagnostic information.

Short cycling questions

How long should an AC cycle normally last?
On a warm day, a typical cooling cycle runs somewhere in the range of ten to twenty minutes, and on a very hot afternoon a correctly sized system may run more or less continuously. Cycles of two to five minutes, repeating, are short cycling and are not normal at any outdoor temperature.
Is short cycling actually damaging?
Yes. Starting is the hardest thing a compressor does, drawing far more current than running does. A system cycling six times an hour is subjecting the compressor to many times the starts it was designed for, which shortens its life significantly. Short cycling also removes very little humidity, so the house stays clammy while the equipment wears out.
Could my thermostat be in a bad spot?
It can contribute. A thermostat in direct sun, above a lamp, near a supply register or on an exterior wall reads a temperature the rest of the house is not experiencing and cycles the system accordingly. It is worth ruling out because relocating a thermostat is far cheaper than most alternatives, though it is rarely the whole story.
Is an oversized system really a problem?
In this climate, yes, and it is one of the more common design faults. An oversized system drives the temperature to setpoint quickly and shuts off before it has run long enough to remove much moisture. You get a house that is cold and humid at the same time, plus the compressor wear that comes with frequent starts. It is a good argument for a proper load calculation at replacement rather than matching whatever tonnage happens to be there.
