Symptom

AC running but not cooling the house

Air is coming out of the vents but the house keeps warming up. That specific combination narrows the cause down considerably.

The short version

If the blower is running and air is coming out of the vents, the indoor side has power and the fan works. That rules out a fair amount straight away. The problem is almost always one of three things: the system is not removing heat (refrigerant, compressor or condenser), not enough air is moving (filter, coil, duct, blower), or the heat is escaping before it reaches you (duct leakage into a hot attic).

A technician distinguishes between those in minutes with pressure and temperature readings. Guessing between them is how people end up paying for parts they did not need.

Check these first

  • Thermostat set to cool, fan on auto, setpoint below room temperature
  • Filter. If you cannot see light through it, replace it
  • Ice on the copper lines or indoor coil. If present, switch cooling off and leave the fan on
  • Outdoor unit running, with the fan spinning and warm air blowing out of the top
  • Condenser clear of grass, leaves and fence panels on all sides

Causes

What is usually behind it

Restricted airflow

This is the most common cause and the cheapest to fix. A clogged filter, a dirty evaporator coil or a blocked return starves the system of air. Less air across the coil means less heat removed, and in bad cases the coil gets cold enough to freeze, at which point cooling stops entirely. If your filter is overdue, start there. Low refrigerant from a leak

A system low on charge cannot absorb heat properly. Symptoms are long run times, a small temperature drop across the coil, and often ice forming on the suction line near the outdoor unit. Refrigerant is not consumed in normal operation, so a low system has a leak somewhere. Adding refrigerant without finding the leak is a temporary measure that has become substantially more expensive since the R-410A phase-down began. See refrigerant leak repair.

A failing capacitor

A capacitor losing capacitance may still start the outdoor fan while leaving the compressor struggling or not running at all. The result is an outdoor unit that appears to be working, with the fan spinning, while no actual cooling is happening. This is a common and inexpensive fix. See capacitor replacement.

A dirty condenser coil

The outdoor coil is how heat leaves your house. Coated in grass clippings, dust and cottonwood, it cannot reject heat efficiently, operating pressures climb and capacity falls. This shows up first as a system that copes in the morning and gives up in the afternoon, which is exactly the pattern people describe most often here.

Duct leakage into the attic

If the ducts leak, cooled air is being delivered to an attic rather than to rooms, and on the return side the system may be pulling in superheated attic air. In a metro that sees around 102 days a year above 90°F, with attic temperatures far above outdoor air, this is a large loss. It usually presents as a system that runs constantly, never quite satisfies, and costs a fortune to run. See ductwork.

A compressor that is not doing useful work

The least welcome answer. A compressor that has failed internally may still hum and draw current without compressing refrigerant. Pressures tell the story quickly. On an older system this is usually the point where replacement enters the conversation. See compressor replacement.

What the pattern tells you

How the failure behaves is genuinely diagnostic, and it is worth noticing before you call.

  • Cools overnight, loses ground by mid-afternoon. Capacity shortfall rather than a hard failure. Think dirty condenser, low charge, duct losses.
  • Never cools, at any hour, air feels cool but weak. Airflow restriction. Filter, coil, blower or return.
  • Never cools, and the air is not cold at all. Refrigerant or compressor. The heat is not being moved.
  • Cooled fine until it suddenly stopped. Component failure. Capacitor, contactor, or a frozen coil that finally blocked completely.
  • Some rooms fine, others hot. Not a cooling failure at all. That is distribution, or a two-storey balance problem.

Leave this part to a technician

Do not open the electrical panel on the outdoor unit, test or replace a capacitor, or add refrigerant yourself.

Capacitors hold a charge after the power is off. Refrigerant handling requires EPA certification and proper recovery equipment, and adding refrigerant to a system that is not actually low causes damage of its own.

Resetting a tripped breaker once is reasonable. Resetting one that trips again is not, because a repeatedly tripping breaker is reporting a fault rather than being temperamental.

Questions about an AC that will not cool

How cold should the air from my vents be?
A healthy system typically produces a temperature drop of roughly 16 to 22 degrees between the return air and the supply air. If your return reads 78°F and your supply reads about 58°F, the system is doing its job. A drop of only a few degrees points at refrigerant charge, compressor performance or airflow.
Why does it cool at night but not in the afternoon?
That pattern usually means the system is working but no longer has enough capacity for peak load. Causes include a dirty condenser coil, low refrigerant charge, duct losses in a very hot attic, or a system that is genuinely undersized for the house. It is a useful clue because it points away from a hard component failure.
Should I turn it off if it is not cooling?
If you can see ice on the refrigerant lines or the indoor coil, yes, switch the cooling off and leave the fan running to thaw it. Otherwise it is generally fine to leave it running while you arrange a visit, unless it is tripping a breaker or making a loud mechanical noise.
Could this just be that it is too hot outside?
Systems are sized against a design temperature rather than the worst day imaginable, and Houston’s cooling design condition sits around 94°F. On an extreme afternoon a correctly working system may run continuously and hold a few degrees above setpoint. That is different from a house that keeps warming up all day, which is a fault.
