What a failed compressor means

The compressor is the pump at the centre of the refrigeration circuit. It raises the pressure and temperature of the refrigerant vapour so heat can be rejected outdoors. Without it working, no cooling happens at all, regardless of what else is in good condition.

Things that look like compressor failure and are not

If the outdoor unit is making a loud grinding or screeching noise, switch the system off at the thermostat and at the breaker and leave it off.

Continuing to run a compressor with mechanical failure can spread metal debris through the refrigerant circuit. A burnout that contaminates the line set and coil turns a compressor replacement into a much larger and more expensive job.
