AC float switch keeps tripping

A float switch that trips is not a fault. It is a safety device working correctly, and it is telling you something about your drain that is worth listening to.

What the switch is doing

A float switch sits in the condensate drain path, either in the primary pan, in the secondary pan, or inline on the drain. When water rises above a set level, the float lifts and opens the low-voltage control circuit. That shuts the whole system down.

It does that because rising water means the drain is not carrying condensate away. Left running, the pan overflows, and in a house with an attic air handler that overflow goes through the ceiling below.

So a tripping float switch is not the problem. It is the alarm. The problem is nearly always a blocked drain line.

What this usually means

  • The primary condensate drain line is restricted or blocked
  • The drain pan is fouled and not draining freely
  • The line has sagged or come apart somewhere in the attic
  • A condensate pump has failed, if one is fitted
  • Occasionally, the switch itself has failed and trips with no water present

The switch failing is the least likely item on this list. Check the drain first.

Why it trips, and what a proper fix involves

The drain is blocked

By far the most common reason. Biological growth restricts the condensate line over a season, water backs up, the float rises. Clearing the line resolves it, and cleaning the pan stops it recurring in a fortnight. See clogged drain lines.

The system is producing more condensate than usual

A coil that has been frozen and thaws releases a large volume of water quickly, which can lift a float switch even with a clear drain. If the switch tripped shortly after ice was present, that is likely the sequence. See frozen coils.

The line has lost its fall

Condensate drains rely on gravity. A line that sags between attic supports holds water at the low point, and that standing water becomes both a restriction and a place for growth to start. Re-supporting the run is part of a proper repair rather than an upsell.

A condensate pump has failed

Where gravity drainage is not available, a pump lifts condensate to a drain point. Failed pumps, stuck floats and blocked discharge tubing all produce a rising water level and a tripped switch.

The switch itself has failed

It happens, but it is the last thing to suspect rather than the first. A switch that has failed open will shut the system down with a completely dry pan. More concerning is a switch that has failed closed, because it offers no protection at all and nothing indicates that until an overflow happens. Testing it is a normal part of a service visit.

What a correct repair covers

Clear the line, clean the pan, verify pan condition, confirm the line has proper fall and support, test that the switch actually interrupts the circuit, and treat the system to slow regrowth. Anything less than that tends to produce a repeat visit within a couple of months.

Leave this part to a technician

Do not bypass, jumper out or remove a float switch to restore cooling.

It costs very little to defeat and it removes the only automatic protection your ceiling has. A system running with a bypassed switch and a blocked drain will keep producing condensate until the pan overflows, and it will do it without any warning at all.

If you need cooling restored urgently, the fix is clearing the drain, not disabling the device that noticed the drain was blocked.

Float switch questions

Can I just reset the float switch and carry on?
You can reset it, and the system will run until the water level rises again, which given the same blocked drain will be within hours. Resetting treats the alarm rather than the fire. The drain needs clearing.
Can I bypass the float switch?
It is physically easy and it is a genuinely bad idea. The switch is the last protection between a blocked drain and the ceiling underneath it. Bypassing it restores cooling and removes the only thing that would have stopped the overflow. Every technician who has cut out a soaked ceiling has found a bypassed float switch above it at some point.
How do I know the float switch is the reason my AC stopped?
The signature is a system that is completely dead with no other symptoms: no blower, no outdoor unit, often a thermostat that still displays but gets no response. Combined with standing water in the drain pan, that is close to conclusive. See AC not turning on.
Do I even have a float switch?
Most systems installed or replaced in recent years in this area do, and any attic air handler above finished space certainly should. Older installations sometimes have none, which is worth correcting. If your system has ever overflowed without shutting itself off, that is a strong hint that there is nothing there to catch it.

If it has tripped more than once, resetting it a third time is not the answer.
